Spring is finally here—and while we welcome longer walks, blooming flowers, and sunny afternoons, April is also a time to shine a light on 3 very important causes that affect the health and well-being of our beloved pets.

🫀 National Heartworm Awareness Month

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms living in the heart and lungs of pets—primarily dogs, but also cats and ferrets. Transmitted by mosquitoes, heartworm is 100% preventable with year-round medication.

What you can do:

  • Keep your pet on a monthly heartworm preventative all year long.
  • Schedule your pet’s annual heartworm test with us if they haven’t had one this year.
  • Ask us about combination preventatives that also protect against fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites.

🦠 Prevention of Lyme Disease in Dogs Month

Ticks are waking up with the warmer weather, and that means an increased risk of Lyme disease. This bacterial illness can cause joint pain, fever, lethargy, and in severe cases, kidney failure.

What you can do:

  • Use a veterinarian-recommended flea and tick preventative.
  • Vaccinate your dog against Lyme disease if they’re at risk.
  • Check your dog for ticks daily—especially after walks in wooded or grassy areas. A lint roller works really well to spot baby ticks on humans and dogs!

💙 Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

This month is also a time to reflect on how we can be advocates for animals everywhere. Whether it’s reporting suspected abuse, volunteering at shelters, or simply spreading kindness to all creatures, each act of compassion matters.

What you can do:

  • Report any suspected neglect or cruelty to your local animal control or shelter.
  • Support local animal welfare organizations through donations or volunteering.
  • Educate others about proper pet care and responsible ownership.
  • Ask how you can contribute to our Pets in Need Fund.
